Hi everybody, my name is Himakar Nagam! I hail from the faraway state of New Jersey and came to Cal to enjoy a new atmosphere. My time here at Cal has been very tough and challenging, but luckily, I’ve had an amazing group of supporters, teachers, and mentors to help guide me through my time here. Many of these people are in PEACE, which is why I cherish my involvement in this organization so much. My passion for teaching and tutoring stems from my time I spent in high school coming in before school to teach others and help them do better in AP chemistry. I realized I really enjoyed helping others understand and love course material, and it was this passion for helping others succeed that pushed me to join a tutoring organization in college as well. I have loved my time with PEACE and have learned a lot so far; I am very much looking forward to helping others succeed to eliminate the notion that Berkeley is very cutthroat and competitive!
Hello! I am Anna from Louisiana – the 48th best state in education. When I was accepted to Cal I was very excited, however I feared that I would have to fight an uphill battle. “They made a mistake. I’m not ready. How will I ever do well.” My first experience at Cal was through the Summer Bridge Program where I took Chem P and Math 32. Both courses were preparatory for Chem 1A and Math 1A respectively. I felt that I would never succeed since I was way below the average for Cal’s test scores and felt that I needed to take these preparatory courses. However, through the incredibly helpful staff at Summer Bridge I was able to learn that my view of Cal was quite wrong. Peer advisors, group leaders, and tutors all helped me establish the background that I needed to study, and they provided me with the confidence to know that I in fact do belong at Cal.
I am so grateful for the help I received at Cal. I want to do everything that I can to return the help that I received in my transition to Cal. Prerak Juthani, one of the co-founders for PEACE was one of my group leaders for Chem P. He told me about PEACE and urged me to join as one of the tutors, so after my first semester I joined as a Chemistry and Math tutor. I was then able to go back to Summer Bridge a year later to be a Math tutor. I also became a Teacher Scholar for Chem 1A Fall 2015. I have absolutely loved the experience. Cal can be very intimidating, but PEACE is doing wonderful things to combat that. Through free tutoring and free advising, PEACE has already made combated Cal’s cut throat stereotype.
As a child, seeing my mom spend so much time on others motivated me as well. I had my first experience helping someone that I did not know very well when I entered high school. My high school has a peer tutoring program, Sttar tutoring, which allows upperclassmen to help their peers in a subject of their choice. Sttar tutoring began shaping the way I viewed those that needed help in academics. One of my first tutees had trouble understanding chemistry concepts, but more importantly, lacked self-confidence. Frustrated with repeated incorrect answers, she was on the brink of giving up. As a tutor, I learned to sympathize with tutee’s difficulties and encourage them to continue trying. Through perseverance, my first tutee was able to finish the semester with an A. She began to believe that with enough effort, she would become a “good student.” It is sad to see students like her be quickly labeled as unintelligent, when they simply needed more time to understand the material.
My goals as a tutor are to not only foster a positive learning environment, but to help my tutees build self-confidence in all aspects of the classes they take: from grasping the course material to answering questions and everything else in between. I look forward to seeing where my tutees will be in the future. That is what I enjoy most about teaching others—watching them succeed.
I really enjoy working with PEACE because it provides an avenue for personalized tutoring. As a result, students are able to ask questions they might not otherwise ask during group tutoring. Everyone learns differently, and through 1-on-1 tutoring, I am able to tailor my teaching style to meet the needs of each tutee. In addition, I am able to create a more intimate tutor-tutee relationship that is more difficult to achieve through group tutoring. I really enjoy seeing my tutee’s growth through each session and appreciate the fact that PEACE has enabled me to do so.
Hello everyone! My name is Ka, a senior majoring in chemistry. My childhood dream is to join Doctors Without Borders. My hobbies are singing, drawing, playing soccer, and making origami. I love nature and animals. I am an active blood donor and volunteer at the emergency department of California Pacific Medical Center.
I was a junior transfer in Fall 2014, so I always want to maximize my memorable moment at Cal. PEACE definitely makes up a huge part of it. I enjoy the process of guiding fellow students to achieve better grades by sharing my studying tips. Instead of posting up “$20 perhour” flyers around the campus and putting a price tag on my quality and love for Bears, I decided to join PEACE without hesitation. In PEACE, the well-organized administration, considerate peer advising, flexible one-on-one tutoring, practical sample questions etc. have impressed me a lot. PEACE tutors are all Cal students who truly understand the obstacles of our tutoring subjects. Therefore, we have developed efficient strategies for getting good grades. So far I have met three tutees who are ambitious, humble, and hardworking people. We basically learned the course material, brainstormed homework assignment, solved exam-type questions, discussed the future topics etc. TOGETHER. They mean more than tutees to me; they are my friends. That satisfaction when I knew one of them scored 100% on a Cal math midterm is marvelous and invaluable!
I have become a more patient, caring, and confident person after joining PEACE. It’s my honor to be a PEACE tutor. We need your support in order to sustain this lovely, supportive, and meaningful community. GO BEARS!
PeaCE loves its tutors!
The PEACE team is consistently aspiring to create a more cooperative educational environment. Our tutors help us accomplish this mission by taking the time to provide free one-on-one tutoring for various UC Berkeley. Some tutors go above and beyond our expectations, and this page is intended to honor all those amazing tutors.
