Residential Computer provides a wireless service (“RESCOMP”) to all residents and visitors of the dorms with a Cal-Net ID. The service is markedly slower, though, and may have limited service in certain areas of the dorms. This also requires signing in every couple of hours, as there is an inactivity timer on it. If you like getting push notifications, this may be a bit troublesome on the residential network.
In the end, it is up to personal preference. Some students do not have a wireless router and can use RESCOMP or the Ethernet comfortably. Others choose to purchase one, and keep it in the future for having wireless networks in off-campus apartments without integrated wireless. Residential Computing has been gradually improving the reach of its services within the units, so there has been a decreasing need for personal wireless routers. But if the convenience speaks to you, buy a wireless router!
